We've heard so many stories about others coming from abroad; migrating into countries, then seemingly relying on assistance/welfare for such n' such periods of time. Up until almost a decade ago, the Canadian guvment decided that 'enough was enough' for allowing long-term welfare checks to be handed out to even our own. Not to say that there was a 'complete cut-off', but the days of raking in welfare checks from month to month, from year to year, from decade to decade, had finally lost its fervor. It got to the point where one could take in a monthly check from welfare, and it literally/financially didn't make sense to seek work, as what one brought in from welfare -somewhat exceeded the national minimum wages. Why bust yer ass to look for a job, when you can be handed monies 'for nothing' on a monthly basis? Obviously...that can't work for able-bodied citizens on welfare; nor does that situation in itself 'pull for a growing economy? And OBVIOUSLY, it's much different for those who are 'physically/mentally' not up to the mandate, and will continue to receive their monthly cheques. Now, let's look at those who wish to settle into another country from abroad - perhaps wanting to make a better life for themselves and their family. Should they be denied citizenship at the borders? Well that brings up a whole new set of questions...doesn't it? Some of the northern european countries DO have the right idea. In that, there is a long list of criteria one must meet in order to gain access. I thought about this long and hard, but after much deliberation, I tend to agree with them. In order to be a citizen of another country, one must PROVE that they won't be a 'liability'. If you're going to be a PART of that country, you'd have to adhere to the laws of THAT land...and then some. Prove that you're not going to be a drain on their economy, and so forth. This obviously, is different than those seeking 'asylum'. But, WHAT IF, some countries already have an 'open door policy'? - TAKE them in. PUT THEM UP with housing/monies. Then SHUT UP and complain later. What if 'complain later' meant that your country is 'overrun' with individuals that DON'T/NOR CARE to adhere to any maxiom but their own at that point (because they are the majority after while? who knows?), and NOW you have to contend with the shitty end of the stick - the one you created in the first place? Now what? I know this is 'pravda' info, but it IS a scenerio that is an all too current theme in many countries right now. Bite off more than we can chew? It seems that migration policies of a leading country in Europe, France, are seriously changing. The country is no longer able to hold back the crowd of migrants, many of whom do not want to integrate into the social and economic life of their new home country. The upcoming radical changes for migrants were announced by French Interior Minister Manuel Valls. After a meeting on the National Immigration and Integration, French Interior Minister Manuel Valls announced significant changes in the country's migration policy. The government will reduce financial assistance to immigrants, and this reduction will be substantial. Starting March 1 of next year, French immigrant benefits will be reduced by 83 percent. The amount of compensation to immigrants who voluntarily want to return home will be also reduced. If earlier the government paid 300 euros for every adult and 100 euros for every minor, in March of 2013 these amounts will be reduced to 50 and 30 euros, respectively. One of the main provisions of the new immigration rules in France is the reduction of unemployment benefits. New rules will directly affect many of the immigrants who do not want to be of real assistance to the country and whose main goal is the existence at the expense of French taxpayers. Now immigrants who are EU citizens receive an allowance of 2,000 euros per adult and 1,000 euros per child. Under the new policy, according to Valls, the payments will be reduced to 500 and 200 euros, respectively. Manuel Valls said that the previous immigration policy did not lead to the desired effect, and the existing outreach programs for immigrants do not work as they were expected to, therefore, the rules must be changed. It would be a huge undertaking to have to move all their street signs to the opposite side of the street. And by a 'huge understaking', that would automatically include a crap-load of monies in the endeavor. Can it be done? Sure. Why not? Like anything else, given time, practice, and filling up the pockets of insurance brokers when all hell breaks loose lol...Yup...I can see that happening, until things are on an even keel after awhile. But the question is, 'Should these people change to accomodate the rest of the world?" - 3/4 of it, to be exact. Personally, I don't think I'd be terrified as such, to drive on 'the other side' of the road across the pond, or in Aussieland, but as with anything, it would take a good deal of practice to be familiar with other customs. I wonder how many car rental companies are reluctant or even turn away folks that aren't indigenous? Meaning that, if someone wanted to rent a car for a week or two and the rental company saw that their driver's license was issued from North America, there's an automatic assumption that the person drives on the right side of the road, would they be denied? Have to show some sort of proof that they have experience driving on the opposite side? I'm not sure how that works, and if any of our European members here know...do share!
