Cada año, el Señor Búho, como director de la escuela de teatro, seleccionaba una pieza de entre todas las que enviaban los animales aspirantes a ser los elegidos para llenar de paz los corazones de los habitantes del bosque, pero ese año… -Bienvenidos todos a la reunión preparatoria de la Navidad –dijo el Señor Búho posado en la rama más robusta del Gran Árbol. Este año, la elección de la obra ha estado muy reñida porque todas las propuestas eran de gran calidad, pero había que elegir un ganador. Así que sin más dilación demos un aplauso al Sr. Conejo, autor de la obra Salvemos el bosque, que podremos ver en Nochebuena. -Gracias, gracias, es un honor para mí –exclamaba Conejo entre vítores y aplausos. -Bien, pues ya sabéis que mañana a las diez darán comienzo las pruebas de selección de actores. Rogamos puntualidad a los interesados –concluyó el Sr. Búho. Al día siguiente, a la hora convenida, había una considerable cola a la entrada del teatro. Al ser un musical, las pruebas se centraron en las habilidades de canto y baile, pues eran requisitos imprescindibles. La obra contaba la trama de un guardabosque que debía salvar la flora de un malvado leñador, obsesionado con cortar un árbol milenario y arrasar todo lo que se pusiera en su camino. En su lucha por preservar el entorno natural, el guardabosque contaba con la inestimable ayuda de sus fieles amigas, un girasol y un lirio que ponían su astucia al servicio de la noble causa. Tras varias horas, los papeles quedaron repartidos de la siguiente manera: el Sr.Oso haría de guardabosque, Castor sería el vil leñador, la Sra. Pata representaría al girasol y la Sra. Lince, al lirio. Al principio todo marchaba estupendamente, los actores estaban contentos con sus papeles y trabajaban duro para perfeccionar sus actuaciones, dejándose la piel en escena, hasta que hizo su aparición el peor y más temido de los fantasmas: la envidia. -No sé Conejo, creo que Castor tendría que tener un poco más de protagonismo. El papel del leñador está lleno de matices y podríamos crear unos espectaculares efectos especiales que dejarían al público boquiabierto –dijo el Sr. Búho en uno de los ensayos. -Sí Búho, puede que tengas razón y deba retocar el texto para darle más peso a Castor y proyectar toda la fuerza del personaje. Podemos hacer un juego de luces y sombras cada vez que aparezca y realzar su papel. Ante estas palabras Castor se puso muy contento, pues estaba muy ilusionado con la obra, pero Oso no lo vio con los mismos ojos. Si a Castor le daban más protagonismo, eso significaba que él dejaría de ser el protagonista absoluto y eso no le gustó nada. Es más, pensó que Búho y Castor lo estaban haciendo a propósito. El ensayo del día siguiente fue un caos. En lugar de avanzar, daban pasos hacia atrás. Oso no colaboraba y Castor, que se había dado cuenta de lo que estaba pasando y de que Oso quería boicotear su actuación, estuvo muy arisco. Por si fuera poco, el vestuario también había sido fuente de conflictos entre las chicas. La Sra. Pata consideraba que el vestido de la Sra. Lince era más llamativo y que debían haberlo echado a suertes. -No entiendo por qué el traje del lirio tiene que ser más bonito que el del girasol. ¿Quién ha elegido el vestuario? No estoy de acuerdo –chillaba Pata. La tensión en el escenario se podía cortar y desastre no se hizo esperar. Así, durante el ensayo de la escena final, que reunía a todos los actores en el escenario para interpretar el número final, comenzaron a empujarse unos a otros con tal brío que parte del decorado se rompió y el árbol se vino abajo. -Orden, orden, pero bueno ¿qué pasa? –preguntó Conejo encolerizado. Habéis echado a perder el trabajo de varios días y de todos los que han colaborado en la puesta en escena. Quedan sólo dos días para Nochebuena, pero si tuviéramos más tiempo os echaría a todos de la obra. Se acabó el ensayo por hoy. Fuera todos de mi vista. Conejo estaba rabioso, no entendía nada. Pero ¿cómo podían pelearse por una cosa así? Era Navidad, había que estar alegre y demostrar que eran amigos. Al día siguiente los habitantes se despertaron siendo testigos de un acontecimiento terrible: la nieve había desaparecido y las estrellas de luz se habían apagado. ¿Cómo era posible? Asustados, los animales se congregaron alrededor del Gran Árbol, en busca del sabio consejo del Sr. Búho. -Queridos habitantes del bosque, el espíritu de la Navidad se ha ido –sentenció Búho. -¿Y cómo podemos hacer que vuelva? –preguntó asustada la Sra. Ardilla. -Oh, no, nos vamos a quedar sin Navidad –sollozó un lobezno. -Hoy es un día muy triste para nuestro bosque. La envidia ha desatado unas reacciones negativas en cadena. La nieve se ha derretido, las estrellas han dejado de lucir y la obra de teatro peligra –advirtió Búho. Oso estaba escuchando tras un arbusto y tenía miedo a salir porque sabía que era el desencadenante de la situación, pero había que ser valiente y afrontar las consecuencias de los propios actos, así que se decidió a salir, aunque tímidamente. -Eh, amigo, lo siento mucho. Estoy arrepentido de mi comportamiento. Si hay algún culpable, ése soy yo. Me cegó la envidia. ¿Qué puedo hacer para enmendar mi error? -No, no tienes por qué cargar con las culpas tú sólo, yo también he contribuido con mi mala conducta. Si sirve de algo yo también lo siento. No quería que pasara esto –se lamentó Castor. La Sra. Lince se acercó a la Sra. Pata, que estaba con sus patitos muy cerca de ella, y le dijo: -Si te hace ilusión, te cambio el vestido, me importa más tu amistad que un trozo de tela. Somos amigas y nuestros pequeños juegan juntos –exclamó la Sra. Lince dándole un abrazo a la Sra. Pata. -¡Mirad, está nevando! –gritó con entusiasmo una voz. -Sí y parece que en el cielo brillan de nuevo las estrellas. El espíritu de la Navidad ha vuelto –se oyó. Ese año, la Navidad se vivió con mucha más intensidad en el bosque, al fin y al cabo estuvieron a punto de perderla para siempre. Pero habían aprendido la lección y ahora sabían que la envidia cegaba y tenía unos efectos muy negativos que no se podían controlar. Los animales habían ahuyentado la Navidad con su conducta, aunque en ellos mismos residía también el poder de resucitar su alma. Así que para que no se les olvidara nunca aquel susto y a partir de ahora prestaran atención a sus comportamientos con los demás, construyeron un gran cartel de madera que colgaron de una de las ramas del Gran Árbol, en el que se podía leer la siguiente inscripción: «El tesoro más valioso que posees es la amistad, cuídalo todos los días y crecerá».
